Lately, I’ve been spending more time on larger, functional pieces.

Bowls that take up space. Mugs with a little emotion to them. Pieces meant to be used every day and still feel considered when they’re sitting empty on a table or shelf. This kind of work asks for a different kind of attention, and I find myself slowing down in a good way.

With functional work, small decisions carry a lot of weight. The curve of a rim. How a foot meets the table. Where a glaze breaks or pools. I’ll live with a piece for a while before deciding how it’s finished. Some feel right quickly. Others need to be revisited, sometimes more than once.

I’m drawn to objects that don’t disappear once they’re doing their job. I want them to hold their own in a room, even when they’re not being used. There’s a quiet balance there that keeps my interest.

This work leans on exploration and refinement. Forms change slowly. Adjustments are subtle. A few millimeters here, a slight shift there. Over time, those small changes add up and the work begins to feel settled.

Mistakes still happen. A bowl comes out heavier than planned. A glaze settles differently than expected. The kiln gods always surprise me. Sometimes that means starting over. Other times it means paying closer attention to what the piece is already doing well.

I’m not rushing this work. It takes time to get it right, and I’m comfortable letting it take the time it needs. Right now, the focus is simply on making pieces that feel resolved, both in the hand and in the room.

Some of these forms will feel familiar. Others are still being worked out.

I’ll keep making them and see where they settle.

I’ve been thinking about the Rock Dogs again.

It usually starts without much planning. A lump of clay. A full cup of hot tea and a positive playlist or podcast cued up. Before long, I’ve got an assembly line of mugs, plant pots, pet bowls, and orbs with small nubby feet, all waiting for their own smile, smirk, or charming expression. At some point, I stop trying to steer things and the clay takes over. One eye a little lower than the other becomes a curious critter. One ear higher than the other turns into something playful. As the hours fly by and the tea runs out, I’m left surrounded by new faces looking back at me. Those are the Rock Dogs days, and they bring me the most joy.

When Rock Dogs first came into the world, I didn’t think of them as a “line.” They were just small clay companions that made me laugh while I was making them. Over time, other people started responding to that too. That part still fills me with gratitude.

All of this work is handmade, though the process shifts depending on what I’m making. When I try to control every part of it, things slow down. When I relax and enjoy the process, these little companions start showing up on their own. Before long, the studio fills up. Shelves get crowded. Every surface has something smiling back at me, all waiting their turn for the bisque fire.

At that point, it feels less like I’m deciding what to make and more like I’m responsible for bringing these little beings to life. Each one needs its own glaze, a bit of care to make sure everything looks right, and then the final firing. It’s slightly ridiculous, honestly, and I still feel excited for the big reveal every time. One day, each of these will end up somewhere new. On someone’s desk. On a shelf in a dorm somewhere. At a loving home or out in a garden. A small presence that makes someone smile when they least expect it. That feels like enough reason for me to keep going.

Even though these lean toward whimsy, I’m still thinking like a potter. Clay bodies. Glaze fit. Weight. How the piece feels in your hands, even if it mostly keeps you company. I want them to sit comfortably alongside functional pieces, not feel out of place.

They ask for nothing and never need you to be a certain way. They’re just there with you. On the desk, on the shelf, nearby when you need a smile. A small, steady presence that makes the day feel lighter.

Some of these pieces will feel familiar. Others are new and still sorting themselves out. I’m giving them the space they need.

This feels like a good place to set this down and see where things go.

I’m a ceramic artist based in Portland, Oregon. For several years, my work lived mostly through markets and an online shop under the names Rock Dogs and Rock Home. That period shaped how I work and how I think, and I’m grateful for the people who crossed paths with the work during that time.

Lately, I’ve been wanting a place that feels slower and more open-ended. A place to think out loud, to keep track of what I’m making, and to notice what’s changing in the studio as it happens.

Here, I’ll share new work as it develops, notes from the studio, techniques I’m learning, mistakes I’m making, and things I’ve picked up along the way. Some posts may be practical. Others more reflective. There’s no fixed schedule, and no expectation that every post leads anywhere in particular.

Some of the work you’ll see here will feel familiar. Some of it won’t. That’s part of the process.

Over the years, that idea turned into long days in the studio, tables set up at markets, and conversations with people who didn’t feel like strangers for very long. Ceramic companions found their way into homes far from where they were made. I’m deeply grateful for that chapter. It shaped both the work and me in ways I couldn’t have predicted.

As time went on, it also became clear that the structure around the work needed to shift.

Being a ceramic artist today comes with real constraints. Materials and firing costs continue to rise. Keeping an always-open online shop asks for a certain kind of attention, one that can quietly pull focus away from the studio. Add the steady hum of online promotion, and it becomes harder to hear your own instincts, or to stay with an idea long enough to see where it wants to go.

Lately, I’ve been thinking more about pace.

This space reflects a move toward a studio-first practice. Fewer expectations. More intention. More room to make work without immediately asking it to explain itself or earn its keep. It also means leaning back into in-person opportunities and brick-and-mortar partnerships, where objects can be handled, lived with, and discovered slowly.

Rock Dogs isn’t disappearing. It’s changing shape. Alongside it, other forms and ideas are beginning to surface. Some may feel familiar. Others may not. I’m curious to see what stays and what transforms.

This blog is where I’ll share that process. Studio notes. New work. Occasional updates about where you can find me in person. There’s no fixed schedule. Posts will appear when there’s something worth sitting with.
